Most people who buy self-tanner already know why. This page is for the ones who don't — and for the ones who want to know exactly what a bottle of this does and does not do.
There is no safe UV tan
A tan is not a glow. It is the visible result of DNA damage in skin cells: the skin makes more pigment because ultraviolet light has already injured it. That is true of the sun and it is true of a tanning bed.
The Skin Cancer Foundation puts the numbers at roughly 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 86% of melanomas associated with exposure to UV radiation. Their dermatologists state it flatly: “There is no such thing as a safe UV tan.”
UV also does the cosmetic damage people spend the rest of their money undoing — lines, loss of firmness, uneven pigment, broken capillaries. Most of what gets called ageing on the face is sun exposure.
What DHA actually does
Self-tanner works with DHA, a sugar-derived molecule. It reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin — cells that are already dead and on their way off — and turns them brown. It does not penetrate living skin, it does not involve radiation, and it does not damage cells to produce colour.
That is the whole difference. The colour looks similar. The mechanism has nothing in common.
Because it sits on cells that shed, the colour fades over about seven days as your skin renews itself.
The part most brands leave out
A self-tan is not sun protection. The colour on your skin gives you no meaningful SPF. Tanned-looking skin burns exactly as fast as untanned skin.
US regulation requires this warning on every tanning product sold without sunscreen in it, ours included (21 CFR 740.19):
“Warning — This product does not contain a sunscreen and does not protect against sunburn. Repeated exposure of unprotected skin while tanning may increase the risk of skin aging, skin cancer, and other harmful effects to the skin even if you do not burn.”
So: wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, seek shade, cover up. Sunless tanner replaces the reason to lie in the sun. It does not replace sunscreen.
What we do not claim
We do not claim this product prevents skin cancer, treats anything, or is a medicine. It is a cosmetic that changes the colour of dead skin cells. Anyone selling you more than that is selling you something.
What it replaces
- A tanning bed session — $10 to $25 each, and the reason dermatologists argue with their patients.
- A salon spray tan — $40 to $60, lasts about a week, requires an appointment. The same DHA, applied by someone else.
- An afternoon in the sun “to top up” — free, and the most expensive of the three.
